Cynthia B. Nava, M.S., LPC-Supervisor
When I was a child, I thought that I wanted to be a doctor when I grew up. I liked the idea of helping people feel better and to live happier, healthier lives. High school biology quickly dissolved me of this dream, and I found myself looking for another career path. Luckily, I took a psychology course in my senior year and the rest, as they say, is history!
I work with my clients to understand that they aren’t “a problem” and that the problem is separate from them. This helps to empower my clients so that they can work to deconstruct societal norms, and to recreate their own adaptive narrative that can then led to a more functional self-identity.
My role as a therapist is to accept my client unconditionally and to provide the safety and support needed to explore all the possibilities together. During this mutual journey, my focus is to help my client heal, energize, and become more aware of their inner strengths, and to understand how outside forces have helped to shape their thoughts and beliefs. This is accomplished through active listening, validation, clarification, and gentle challenges to current narratives, while providing unconditional acceptance.
