You are more than what happened to you.
Trauma and abuse can affect the way you see yourself, relate to others, and move through the world. Even when the experience happened years ago, its impact may still show up in your relationships, emotions, confidence, boundaries, or sense of safety.
You may find yourself constantly anticipating problems, questioning your decisions, putting other people’s needs before your own, or feeling disconnected from the person you used to be. You may understand that something was harmful but still struggle to move forward.
You are not broken. Your responses may be understandable adaptations to experiences that were difficult, overwhelming, or unsafe.
At Willow & Sage Counseling, we provide compassionate, trauma-informed therapy for adults healing from many forms of trauma and abuse, including:
- Childhood trauma and adverse experiences
- Emotional, verbal, physical, or sexual abuse
- Domestic violence and relationship trauma
- Narcissistic or emotionally harmful relationships
- Complex trauma
- Family dysfunction and chronic conflict
- Emotional neglect
- People-pleasing and difficulty setting boundaries
- Shame, self-doubt, and difficulty trusting yourself
- Feeling responsible for other people’s emotions
How trauma can affect your life
Trauma does not always look the way people expect. You may not identify with the word “trauma,” or you may feel that your experiences were not serious enough to deserve support.
You may notice:
- Difficulty relaxing, even when things are going well
- Feeling constantly alert or emotionally overwhelmed
- Fear of disappointing others
- Difficulty saying no or expressing your needs
- Trouble trusting people or feeling emotionally safe
- Repeating painful relationship patterns
- Feeling disconnected from your body, emotions, or identity
- Shame or self-blame
- Difficulty knowing what you want
- Feeling exhausted from always holding everything together
These experiences can make it difficult to feel grounded and connected to your life. Therapy can offer a place to slow down, understand your responses, and begin creating new ways of relating to yourself and others.
A different way of understanding your story
Our approach is grounded in narrative therapy, which means we do not see you as the problem. Instead, we explore the experiences, relationships, beliefs, and expectations that have influenced the story you tell about yourself.
Together, we may explore questions such as:
- What messages did you receive about your worth?
- How did you learn to stay safe or avoid conflict?
- Which patterns helped you survive earlier experiences?
- Which beliefs continue to shape your relationships today?
- What parts of your story deserve more attention, compassion, or understanding?
- What would it look like to build a life based on your values rather than fear or obligation?
Therapy is not about forcing you to forget the past or telling you how to live. It is about helping you develop greater self-understanding, reconnect with your strengths, and make choices that feel more authentic and empowering.

You do not have to heal alone
Healing from trauma and abuse takes time, and progress can look different for everyone. In therapy, you can work at a pace that respects your needs while developing tools to support emotional regulation, boundaries, self-trust, and healthier relationships.
If you are tired of surviving and ready to begin healing, Willow & Sage Counseling is here to walk alongside you.
